The answer is very easy. English is an important aspect of our daily lives. WHY? English is a universal language (global language in case ,we are not the only creature who can speak.hehehehe.. im talking about aliens. I'm not sure if they do exist though) The world has changed. We no longer live in our country alone. There are tourist, immigrants, foreigner and etc in our country and the best way to communicate with them is by using English as a mode of communication.
In the world on IT (information technology) the common language used is English. Most website uses ENGLISH as their main Language. For business men you would have to learn English to expand your business to overseas. If you are a student you would have to learn English for your own bright future or, at least, pass the exam. As for employees you would have to learn English for the benefit of your career. Even if you are just a street walker you might still want to learn English to understand what's going since it would be nice to learn how the world is doing. Right?
No matter who you are, no matter where you are. Learning English is very important. You can't avoid it and do not avoid it before you get too far behind.

When I came to China, I had a boyfriend for 5 years. I just shrugged off the jokes that we will breakup since 4 teachers here also broke up with their boyfriend. They labelled it as the curse of China. I was confident since we were together for such a long time and I thought that I will end up marrying him. I did not expect what happened next. First, Let me start when I first met him, I was just 20 years old and graduated from an all girls school. Actually all throughout my school years I studied in an exclusive school and I never regretted it. I met him at my first workplace during training though we did not become office mates since he did not make it until the last part of the training. At that time. there were a couple of guys who had expressed their interest on me but I was scared of them. They were a bit aggressive for me. To make the story short, he was the guy who had patience in me while I adjust to the opposite sex. It was a smooth and sailing relationship but I'm not saying that there were no fights. We had our share of arguments and misunderstandings.
Things began to change when I got accepted here to work in China. I accepted the opportunity because you will never know when it will knock on you door again. My ex-boyfriend was supportive and allowed me to pursue my teaching career. Everything was doing good, we communicated through QQ, skype, chikka messenger and other social networking sites. We made it through somehow but there was a fight that was the beginning of everything. It was when a girl was being sweet to him and he insisted that they were just friends. I asked him to avoid that girl because when I talked to the girl in a calm way on yahoo messenger. She did admit that she liked my boyfriend because he was sexy.
That girl then broke up with her boyfriend and I don't know why but that's when I started noticing something fishy on twitter. The girl just bought a PSP and was playing "monster hunter", a game which my ex-boyfriend was addicted to. I also saw post like "pakisabi nalang na mahal ko sya di na baleng may mahal syang iba" (Please tell me him that I love him even if he loves someone else). Meanwhile my ex-boyfriend was always busy with work and stuff. I also got an email in Facebook from my boyfriend from the so called "girlfriend" saying she pities me because even if we were together for 5 years already, there he was cheating on me and even gave the password to his Facebook account as a sign that he was serious with her. That so called girlfriend didn't tell me her name though. I replied to her calmly and she on the other had was like not an educated girl. I did confront my ex-boyfriend and he denied it, saying it might be a hacker. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I also decided to go home during our summer holidays despite wanting to save money. I wanted to know if it was just the distance that was making our relationship unstable. Unfortunately just few days before my birthday which was also a few days before going home, he told me he can't pick me up at the airport because he has been dating that girl for almost four months already. He told me that he still loves me but like a sister he never had. I did bargain with him saying lets make it work and other stuff. Then I prayed to God and after that I wrote him a letter saying I take back all the bargaining and I wished him luck. Also that it was the risk I took when I accepted the job here. I never said anything bad to him nor to the girlfriend/hacker. At the back of my mind just what kind of girl did he fall in love with.
My heartbreak was really painful but I got a good gift afterwards. I was offered a new job and they were even nice enough to wait for me even if my contract ends at the middle of the semester. The job was better and much easier. Also, I still went home and with the help of my friends and family I began to love my self again because honestly I did thought that there was something wrong with me, like I was ugly or something. I dated 5 guys at the same time as a rebound but I was honest with them that I just broke up. They were understanding enough and there was a guy who pursued me even if I was back in China. I said yes to him when I was in China already. Now we have been together for more than a year. I'm hoping against odds that this time will be better.
I was in the hospital for two days because of severe diarrhea. I really didn't want to go to the hospital because hospitals here in China are quite different. I gave up and allowed my self to go to the hospital. I was already feverish, dehydrated and suffering from cramps.
I don't want to be rude but here in China, most hospitals have a problem with hygiene. Their lab coats and uniform looks like it haven't been washed for a week or more. I'm a licensed Nurse in my country but wasn't able to find a job, that's why I tried ESL teaching. I still remember how strict my school was if our uniform wasn't properly ironed, our hair should be in a bun with a hairnet, our uniform should be white and free from stains. I'm aware that in hospital settings, nurses no longer wear buns but you can still notice that there uniforms are clean and the hospital has a distinct smell of bleach.
The Doctors and Nurses in the hospital I was admitted to were nice but they were quite busy. My IV (Intravenous) fluid almost dried out which I didn't notice because I feel asleep. Luckily, the other patient's husband noticed it or else I would have suffered from air embolism which can be dangerous. The thing I like when I was hospitalized was the size of their needles for IV which is equivalent to 20-22 gauge. I appreciate that they use smaller needles because my veins are really small and I easily get bruises because I have low blood count.
My treatment consisted of IV fluids infused with Vitamins plus a drug which I forgot the name but judging from the name I think it has something to do with electrolytes replacement. They also gave me lactobacillus capsule which should be taken twice a day. They didn't prescribe me any anti-spasmodic and loperamide which I know is the most commonly used drug for diarrhea. I even showed the Chinese translation for those two drugs but no luck and I couldn't argue anymore since I was really weak that time and it doesn't help that their is a communication issue. I don't speak Chinese and they only knew a few words of English, I was just able to figure out the treatment course because they tried to show it to me through actions. Also for skin test, they do it on your wrist part which is quite different. Anyways, since they didn't prescribe me any medicine to stop the diarrhea, Is still suffered from it for an additional 2 days. My advice for teachers who want to work here in China, try to bring your own medicines.
I got a lot of messages today asking how I was. The reason for that was because a strong earthquake hit Japan and the China. The intensity was 8.9 for Japan, it was so strong that it caused a tsunami. As of the moment, it has been reported that more than 1000 people probably died due to the earthquake and tsunami. As for the injured people, I wasn't able to read about it but I know there are still a lot of missing people. Here in China, the intensity was 5.4. Yunnan province was the one greatly affected with around 250 casualties and 25 deaths. I know, I'm lucky that I wasn't affected by the earthquake but I'm sad that a lot of people died and got injured.
Lately, there has been a lot of earthquakes, tsunamis and other environmental disaster that killed a lot of people. If I'm not mistaken the latest was in New Zealand and around 65 people died. It makes me wonder why there are a lot of disasters happening right now. Is it a way of mother earth balancing the population or the rumors that the end is near. I honestly don't know what the reason behind those tragedies. I just hope that, no more lives would be taken.
Those incidents taught me to value my life more. I know that I don't have any control with those natural disasters. It's scary but as a Catholic I do believe that I don't own this live. It's a borrowed gift that I should treasure and be thankful for.
Let's pray for the victims and may their souls rest in peace.
For most Filipino's we often try our luck abroad for our families. It's the same for me as well, I don't have my own family yet but I do help out because my parents are no longer working and I still have two siblings who are still studying. Me and my sister are the ones supporting our family right now. She's n Singapore working as a nurse. OK. Enough with the drama, lets go back to the topic which is how to send money in the Philippines.
This was the first mode of sending money which I tried. It would require a bit of your time since in China you can only send US dollars. So you would need to change your RMB (Chinese money) to dollars. You can change it at the black market or banks. I had mine changed in Bank of China. After your done with changing the money, you would now need to find a Western Union Branch, they are usually located inside China Postal Bank. The fee for sending money would be $15 for amount lesser than $500.
I got to know this method through a fellow Filipino in QQ (its the biggest social site in China). I'm the only Filipino working in my school, so there's no other Expats to ask advice from. What I did was open two accounts in Bank of China, so that's two separate ATM. One was for my savings and the other one was for my mother. I then mailed the ATM to my mother via EMS (courier service). If I remember it correctly I paid 130 RMB. My mom got the ATM after 25 days, such a long time right? EMS goes through our local post office in Philippines. I think now you understand why. Union pay is the logo that my mom needs to find and a lot of bank caters to union pay like BPI, China bank, HSBC and etc. The fee is 200 per withdrawal (I heard some bank charge 150 though I'm not sure what particular bank). Maximum withdrawal would be 10k per transaction for most banks. My friend said in HSBC you can withdraw 20k in a single transaction. So right now i just go to China bank deposit the money (free on charge) and my mom gets it instantly.
I know I did pay 130 RMB to send the ATM but if you would compare 200 pesos versus 645 ($15 x 43 - exchange rate) it would be bigger savings on the long run. Also its easier rather than go to two places bank of China (to exchange dollars) and the Post bank of China -Western union (to send money)
I'll try to add more ways to send money.
I never been to China nor any other countries expect my own of course (hehehehe). I initially went with a business visa to meet with the school and site seeing. I think they also wanted to see me personally since Chinese are quite superstitious according to the other Filipino teachers. They are looking for a certain aura, I honestly don't know what that means but I'm lucky to be chosen. I stayed three weeks and met with my future students, fixed my FEC(foreign expert certificate) toured the place and ate a lot. Boy! Chinese sure do order food a lot, which at first I couldn't enjoyed since I sucked at using chopsticks. According to my friend when a Chinese invites you to dinner you should eat a lot (or as much as you can) because if you don't, they will think you don't like their food. I only stayed there for 3 weeks but I gained a lot of weight.
The school I teach in is huge Huai'an and they sure wasted a lot of space, the schools are huge and the buildings are far apart from each other. The canteen was one big building with three floors. There were a lot of buildings. It's like a whole town in my opinion though I'm exaggerating a bit and they are still expanding.
The three weeks i stayed in China made me want to stay longer. The people were great, the scenery is luscious and green and yes everything is cheap. My first time in China was a experience worth remembering.
Long hours of drive, nocturnal life and unlimited coffee was my world when I was working for American Based Company. The free coffee was a big part of my life since I had to battle against nature. Why? I was awake while the rest of my fellow men were sleeping. That's what you get if you're working in American company since we have 9-12 hours difference depending on the state. It was a good thing that DELL (The company i was working with) was kind enough to provide us with different flavors of coffee. There was the regular coffee, caramel coffee, and my favorite one toffee nut coffee. The work was hard but the pay was higher compared to other jobs in our country. Due to the economic crisis the DELL branch I was working with was to be leased to another company that I didn't like so I didn't accept the new company offer to hire me. DELL was generous and gave a really good severance package for those who did not accept the offer of DELL's buyer.
Thanks to DELL I was able to buy a high end laptop using the severance pay which became my major tool as an ESL tutor. I pampered my self and had a vacation. Visited some of the tourist spots here in our country. After Vacation I decide to look for a job that would be easier. I stumbled upon and decided to give it a shot. I got students and even private students. It was fun and fulfilling for me specially when i hear sincere thank you and appreciation from my student's. I also love the fact the I'm working at the comfort of my own home.
